PRESS: Ukraine fails to block Russian Internet services

MOSCOW, Aug 21 (PRIME) -- Russia’s biggest Internet services are still very popular in Ukraine even after the official ban imposed by President Pyotr Poroshenko in May, business daily Vedomosti reported on Monday, citing statistics of Factrum Group Ukraine.

In July, social networks VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, and portal Mail.Ru, all the three owned by Mail.Ru Group, were used at least once per month by 35%, 22%, and 30% of Ukrainian Internet users, respectively, and search engine Yandex was surfed by 33%. In total, Ukraine has 21.6 million active Internet users, or 64.8% of the country’s population.

Data provided by analytical company SimilarWeb confirmed the fact that Ukraine is the second source of traffic for Yandex and services of Mail.Ru Group after Russia.

SimilarWeb registers connections to a Web site from local IP-addresses only as the Ukrainian audience, so it turns out that all these users have access to Russian Internet services without anonymizers or other special software to skirt blocking.

Ukrainian authorities also say that resource muting does not bring much fruit.

Spokespeople for Yandex, Mail.Ru Group, and VKontakte refused to comment on the matter, but said that Ukrainian users actively use software to cheat blocking.

Resources of Yandex and Mail.Ru Group, as well as a number of Russian television channels, have been banned in Ukraine since May 17 under Poroshenko’s sanctions against a list of Russian companies and individuals.
